Church Planting in the Post-Modern West

Behind Paris’s beauty lies deep spiritual need. A City of Light follows local pastors and their churches as they bring gospel hope to one of Europe’s most secular cities.

This in-depth documentary explores what it means to plant churches in a post-Christian culture—where Christianity is often seen as antiquated, foolish, or even offensive. Through vulnerable testimony, historical reflection, and biblical conviction, this film captures the struggles and the joy of planting churches in Paris.

Made with Purpose

When I first heard of the idea of a mission trip to Paris, I thought, ‘That sounds like a thinly veiled excuse for a vacation.’ Many Christians react the same way. My presuppositions were shattered, however, by one statistic: fewer than 1% of the population of Paris is Evangelical Christian.

The film first premiered at Christ Covenant’s Reach the World conference, where it accompanied and strengthened the in-person testimonies. It served as a window into the work and lives of their church-planting partners, who are laboring to bring the gospel to bear on a city shrouded in darkness.

The project was spearheaded by Billy Bean, Christ Covenant Pastor of Missions. The church wanted a film with a similar presupposition-shattering aim—one that would serve both their own congregation and the broader evangelical world. They desired a film crafted to challenge common misconceptions about missions, display the realities of the post-Christian West, stir affections toward Paris, and inspire Christians to consider being sent out on mission.

Our Hope & Prayer

Christ Covenant, Billy, and I all share the desire that this film would reach far beyond the walls of a single local church and be a blessing to all who watch—to catalyze faith.

I’d like to invite you to join us in prayer. Pray that the Lord would give Parisians eyes to see and ears to hear. That He would send many more gospel-believing, church-centered workers into the harvest field. And that French churches would be strengthened and multiplied.

“Mission doesn’t start with the name of a city—mission starts with the name of a person.”
